Tunisia is in the spotlight this month with the zanqa festival. Expect lots of activities: the vernissage of 'Regards sur la Tunisie d'antan'  by the artist Moufadhel Adhoum, poetry readings from Aboul-Qacem Chebbi's oeuvre, workshops on Tunisian percussion, calligraphy or cooking, live music, crafts and more! Click on the picture on the left to see the full programme for next month.

From June 13 to July 4, Kuumba brings you the vibrant spirit of Tunisia with music, poetry, exhibitions, workshops, and delicious food. We kick off the Zanqa Festival on the 13/06 at 17:00 with the opening of the exhibition ‘Regards sur la Tunisie d’antan’ by artist Moufadhel Adhoum, live music, and a buffet full of Tunisian flavors. Free entry, all are welcome!

Your film deserves a spotlight at Schijnwerpers kortfilmfestival, a short film festival for and by youth! We are putting documentary or fiction short films, video clips and sketches on the following themes in the spotlight: African cultures, the African diaspora, decolonisation, discrimination, migration. Submit your film before 1 July 2025 via this form: https://forms.gle/Yky2mXfwPiRL264j8.

Guidelines:

  • It must be a short film, 20 minutes maximum.
  • Short documentaries, fiction short films, video clips and sketches – all formats are welcome.
  • You are between 16 and 25 years old.

In August, we’ll let you know if your film will be screened.

“Dynamiting Connection:
Decision by Flemish Government Affects Flemish-African House in the Heart

With deep indignation, Kuumba, the Flemish-African House, learned on May 9th that our organization will lose its structural subsidies from the Flemish government. This decision hits hard for a small non-profit like ours. Kuumba vzw has been building bridges between communities, cultures, and generations for years with limited resources. The complete loss of this funding means we must halt 80% of our operations. [...]"

Kuumba krijgt geen subsidies van de Vlaamse overheid. Ondanks de verontwaardiging blijven we niet zomaar stilzitten bij deze beslissing. Wij zien hierin een verontrustende trend in de manier waarop onze regering organisaties uit de socioculturele sector laat vallen. Zoals wij zonder duidelijke motivering slachtoffer zijn van dit beleid, kunnen ook anderen daar het slachtoffer van worden. 

Daarom hebben we een open brief geschreven waar we zo veel mogelijke handtekeningen voor willen verzamelen. Hiermee willen we de regering wijzen op haar verantwoordelijkheden naar de sector en de samenleving toe. Geen enkele organisatie verdient het om geschrapt te worden zonder dialoog, uitleg of enig uitzicht op alternatieven.

‘Family Day!’ is one of our recurring events with playful and collective activities for children and families. We want to create a warm space where parents, children and residents from Anderlecht and surroundings can meet through fun activities. Everyone can participate in African board games, face painting, crafts, dance or percussion workshops. During the event, Kuumba Kaffee will also be open, so curious passers-by are welcome to pop in and get a taste of the atmosphere.

  • From July 1st to 4th, from 10:00 to17:00. each day, we are organizing a Digital Storytelling workshop together with JES.
  • You will work on your own story. You’ll learn how to tell something personal using images, photos, and sound. Step by step, you'll learn how to create a very short film or digital story. You’ll learn to write, plan, storyboard, take photos, and edit everything into a beautiful final result.
  • The workshop is for young people aged 16 to 25. Are you younger? No problem! Send us an email and we’ll see together whether age is a barrier.
